Yes, this is one RAW file from a shot I took at Thors Well on the Oregon Coast. There was no plugins and extra fluff. Natural HDR has been developed and refined for years using the native tools and Lightroom, RAW and Capture One. I remember learning and teaching HDR in the early days. But it was wrong!
Back in the days of the Pro Photo Show podcast we all talked about HDR a lot. I taught workshops and we were focused on tools that would allow us to blend images. But I soon realized we needed more.
Blending can be useful. The problems is that it tends to create a photo with nothing but mid-tones and then we edited the heck out of it to make it look interesting. But while the early famous HDR photos were interesting, they focused more on being stylized with crazy clarity or sharpness.
The problems the stylized looks is easy to overdo and while it's not bad, it's separate from HDR. A good HDR process should give us dynamic range, light to dark, with contrast and pulling in detail from every corner.

In this shot I took in the underground tunnels of Guanajuato, I didn't need to pretend it was day. I need a good street formulas. Something that would retain texture and detail while bringing to life the color and sound of the streets.
This shot has a tone of range from it's lights to darks. But having quick aces to clean HDR ferules let me find the right look. Good presets and tool mean you edit better because you find things you never would have found otherwise. They are essential my my image making.
The HDR modules in your apps can be deceiving. You can adjust shadow and highlight and extract dynamic range. But to make it look amazing you then need to balance the shadow and contrast elements. This is where using every slider and module we have in app like Lightroom and Capture One becomes important.
But that means endless tinkering. So always have good formulas focusing on HDR and you will get results.
