The Whispering Barn - 2009, Gavin Seim. Central WA.

I’ve driven by this old barn a hundred times. It’s a few miles down St. Andrews RD, above Coulee City. It always caught my eye, standing resolute and solitary. But I didn’t finally photograph it till spring of 2009. I’m glad I did because shortly after the view was completely altered, with new fences and other work in front of the barn. It was a peaceful place, silent as the sun set over the farmlands and the light sank down behind distant hills.

Gavin Seim: I write a lot about HDR photography here on Pro Photo Show. It’s an often misunderstood animal, that when used correctly is incredibly powerful.

This has been in the works for some time, but it’s finally official. My 3 day HDR workshop will be held in Fall of 2009 in Central WA, we’re going to cover everything from basic HDR landscapes to using HDR for amazing people pictures.

This is a small workshop limited to about 15 participants. Seats are first come first serve. You can learn more over on KungFu Photo.

This is my masterpiece of the week. It’s from last Sunday’s drive and was taken overlooking the Columbia river just off Manilla Creek Road. (Here’s the coordinates on the map). You can click the picture for a bigger view.

I did this with two, three shot HDR images of the scene stitched together as a panorama. The view  was amazing. We stopped here earlier in the day, so I knew it had potential. We moved on, but at sunset came back for the shoot.

It was late Sunday night on the way home from bible study at my brothers house near Coulee City. I was looking west towards Waterville and there were so many stars. They live in the country, so the only artificial lights are on the horizon.

This was taken with my new Canon 5D MK II. This won’t mean much to non photo geeks, but I shot it at ISO 6400, Sigma 15mm Fisheye lens @ f2.8 exposed for 13 seconds and cleaned with neat image: The heavens delare the glory of God… Gav

by Gavin Seim: A problem people often have with HDR pictures, is getting a bold but balanced look. Often their images end up too flat, too fake, or too fancy and the entire goal (which is a vivid High Dynamic Range image) is lost. Here’s a few tips that apply to HDR nature as well as HDR portrait images on how I get a bold but not overkill look.

Below I’ve combined two – three image sets as HDR’s in Photomatix, but I’m just getting started. To bring it out, I need to mold them a bit and coax out the details I need.
