EOD 5D MK II (EOS 7D) Coming in April? (Rumor)

canon_eos_5d_large.jpgSee This Newer Post for up to date info on the 5D release date:

Someone over on the DP Review forums claims that the Canon EOS 5d MKII, also rumored as the EOS 7D ( ya we know Canon tends makes names complex) should be announced toward the end of April.

Note that he does not give his source for obvious reasons, and we can in no way confirm this, so it’d just rumor at this point. It does stand to reason that Canon will be replacing the popular 5D this year, and also working catch up with Nikon in the ISO department (we hope)

A few cool specs include…

  • – 15.3 MP full frame CMOS sensor (vastly improved light-gathering capacity per pixel: improved micro lenses; miniaturized micro circuitry; enhanced signal/noise ratio)
  • – Weather sealing same as 1Ds Mark III
  • – ISO 12800 (C.F. up to 25600)
  • – All-new 29-point TTL CMOS sensor with 12 cross-type for F/2.8 or faster lens (35% faster than 40D)
  • – Live View, and more…

Now this all sounds pretty exciting, but as always time will tell. This has been anticipated for sometime, and we’re waiting Canon.

  1. People at the DP Review forum has been falsely spreading the 5D MII rumor for more than a year now…..But what the heck, I will wait until April to upgrade 😆

  2. :smile:Well some good rumors do come out of DPReview, but I know this ones been around.

It does stand to reason though. It’s due, and Canon needs to keep pace with the competition. I make a point of always putting “Rumor” in the titles of this type of post so everyone is clear.

Maybe your one of those guys that a day after you but a regular 5D, they’ll bring out a new one!

  3. The 5D replacement has been predicted for quite a while now. And there are always people spreading rumors about new Canon SLR bodies. Unless someone has some serious inside information, I wouldn’t listen. Canon never tells me anything until they make something public. There are very few exceptions to this. They are very tight with the information.

Based on what’s been introduced at the past few photo tradeshows, and the fact that this is a Photokina year, I would guess a 5D replacement will be announced in the late summer or fall (August or September). April is not a typical time for a pro camera introduction, unless it coincides with an event like the Olympics. So based on past experience, I wouldn’t give this rumor much creedence. However, I have been surprised before…

About the Author

Glad you're here.

I'm from WA State USA and started studying photography in 97. I started work as a pro (using that word loosely because I sucked) using film at age 16. I learned fast but was not as easy to find training then. Sometimes I beat my head against the wall until I figured stuff out.

As digital dawned I went all in and got to study with masters like Ken Whitmire. In 09 I founded the Pro Photo Show podcast. I started promoting tone-focused editing. When Lightroom arrived, I started developing tools to make editing and workflow better.

20 years of study and photography around the country earned me a Master of Photography (M.Photog) from PPA. I got to see my workshops and tools featured in publications across the industry. Once I even won the prestigious HotOne award for my "EXposed" light and tone workshop.

Wanting something calmer, I moved to Mexico in 2017. It's a land of magical light. I'm here now exploring light and trying to master my weak areas. I make videos of that for my Youtube channel, sharing what I learn. I hope you'll stick around and be part of Light Hunters Tribe... Gavin
