  1. Gavin,

Your 5D will auto focus in video mode if you press the AF button and wait for conformation.

  2. Ya I know about that Adam. I think what most are complaining about is that you can’t AF once you start shooting the video (not that I’ve found anyways)

  3. Ok just making sure. I think auto focus while filming will eventually come. I was able to shoot video with a D90 the other day and really want the feature just to be able to take a quick note. Do you think Lightroom and Aperture will eventually be able to organize and play (no editing) videos?

  4. Exactly. When I import photos from my G9 and also have videos on the card, Aperture tells me that there are other files on the card and ask if I want them imported. If I say yes, it gives me a finder window so I can select a location outside of Aperture. It would be nice if they were included in/search able in my library.

  5. Re: Manual Focus. I was listening to the podcast today and thought I’d try a little manual focus at a basketball game tonight. The first thing that popped into my head when I looked through the viewfinder is that we typically don’t have things like split prism viewfinders that helped us acquire focus back in the old days (I used to shot manual focus with a Minolta XG-1 back around 1980). My Nikon D300 will light up green light when focus is acquired but that green light is at the bottom corner of the frame, not in the middle where I am watching the sports action. I think it is possible to get different viewfinder grids but I’m not sure if something like the old split screen prism is available without spending a fair amount of coin.

  6. One more comment, this one about Smugmug. Smugmug does allow pro users to set up what they call “proof days”. If the proof days option is set then when a customer places an order Smugmug sends an email to the photographer so he can replace the photo with a higher resolution version. Users can select an option of 1 to 7 days.

Also, when a sale is make, regardless of the proof day option, Smugmug sends out an email that lets the photographer know what photos were purchased and who purchased them.

I have ordered a lot of my own 4×6 prints through Smugmug and the print quality has been good. I am under the impression that they use various regional labs for printing.

  7. Hi Gavin,

I just wanted to make a correction to your comment during the 54th podcast.
Although Smugmug leaves you with no alternative when it comes to fulfilling
your customers order, you definitely know who your client is and you also have
up to 7 days of hold time which gives you a chance to do some additional work on
the proof purchased and only after re-uploading you would give the Smugmug an OK
to proceed. 1 to 7 days hold is an option you would set in your profile.

I have used Smugmug for over two years and so far I’m very happy with their service.
$150/12 is nothing comparing to other alternatives and the fact that I have not sold too many prints (still under a $1000) is because just like you I sell DVD as part of my packages. As far as being just an online proofing gallery it’s been great.

    Thank you,
    Gene

About the Author

Glad you're here.

I'm from WA State USA and started studying photography in 97. I started work as a pro (using that word loosely because I sucked) using film at age 16. I learned fast but was not as easy to find training then. Sometimes I beat my head against the wall until I figured stuff out.

As digital dawned I went all in and got to study with masters like Ken Whitmire. In 09 I founded the Pro Photo Show podcast. I started promoting tone-focused editing. When Lightroom arrived, I started developing tools to make editing and workflow better.

20 years of study and photography around the country earned me a Master of Photography (M.Photog) from PPA. I got to see my workshops and tools featured in publications across the industry. Once I even won the prestigious HotOne award for my "EXposed" light and tone workshop.

Wanting something calmer, I moved to Mexico in 2017. It's a land of magical light. I'm here now exploring light and trying to master my weak areas. I make videos of that for my Youtube channel, sharing what I learn. I hope you'll stick around and be part of Light Hunters Tribe... Gavin
