    – Quality is the real advertising.

  1. Well done, Gav. This was the best podcast that I’ve ever heard from PPS. You really start to shine a little when you chill out, slow down, and focus. I actually learned a few things this from this episode.

You’re starting to hit your stride; don’t lose. Again, hats off to you.

  2. Good podcast Gavin. I’ve heard the large wall portrait arguement before and it makes a lot of sense, especially for photographers moving up a tier in the clients they are catering too. I know a local photographer that sells expensive, large wall portraits and does very well. It doesn’t fit my current business model, but hopefully it does one day. The only hazard I can think of is that I personally know of at least one customer of a wall portrait photographer that felt absolutely ripped off by the expense. When we speak of word of mouth advertising we have to be careful about pushing high end products on people that don’t want to pay for them. I know the negative word of mouth about that photographer exists because of it. I also know that everytime that customer looks at that portrait, despite it being really great, they feel regret, not pride.

  3. I enjoyed the show this time. Thanks for your time and effort. I thought some of your advice and experiences were great and I really like the large portrait idea as well as the metal prints. Thanks for those two tidbits.

As James above said, ‘when you chill out’. I have found you to talk too fast in past shows and this time it wasn’t like that. It was more enjoyable to listen to and easier to digest the info you are sharing.

    Thanks again.

About the Author

Glad you're here.

I'm from WA State USA and started studying photography in 97. I started work as a pro (using that word loosely because I sucked) using film at age 16. I learned fast but was not as easy to find training then. Sometimes I beat my head against the wall until I figured stuff out.

As digital dawned I went all in and got to study with masters like Ken Whitmire. In 09 I founded the Pro Photo Show podcast. I started promoting tone-focused editing. When Lightroom arrived, I started developing tools to make editing and workflow better.

20 years of study and photography around the country earned me a Master of Photography (M.Photog) from PPA. I got to see my workshops and tools featured in publications across the industry. Once I even won the prestigious HotOne award for my "EXposed" light and tone workshop.

Wanting something calmer, I moved to Mexico in 2017. It's a land of magical light. I'm here now exploring light and trying to master my weak areas. I make videos of that for my Youtube channel, sharing what I learn. I hope you'll stick around and be part of Light Hunters Tribe... Gavin
