Gavins new fine art blog. f164. A travelogue and deep analysis journal.
Canon announced the 60D.
**Corrections. I repeatedly said D,30 D40, D50. Those ate old camera. I meant to say 30D, 40D, 50D. Also I say Episode 70 at the start. This is #71.
Stolen Photos. Not an uncommon problem. This is the photo they used. They did pay up however.
LR 3.2 is official. We’ll see if it fixes things.
Some new bodies, lenses etc. Nothing earth shattering. D60 is here, but just is an upgraded rebel (ie Sd cards) 7D seems to be the new 50D.
Here’s the article about Canon lenses falling off.
Projects:
Gavin’s article about selling large wall portraits.
Gavin used this Ewa Marine bag for the underwater session.
Here’s the blog post of the underwater portraits session in Chelan.
Fusion Video reaction. Heres the the client reaction. Heres the post with the result.
Midnight Seattle went into the PPA loan collection.
Photography and Coffee. I just assume photographers drink good coffee. I LOVE coffee. My son helps me make espresso almost every day. The poll is in the sidebar. This is the Rocket Premium Plus I bought. Loving it.
Pick: Epson artisan printers. Cheap printing of disks. Artisan 50 or Artisan 710 All in One.
These are the printable disks Gav used. Best we’ve found.
Here’s our new trailer.
I also got a PK301 mini projector.
I really like this podcast, especially your views on fusion video! Would you like to share how you are going to monetize the videos? DVD for clients with additional fee?
Awesome show! I especially like the talk about the underwater photography. I’ll have to do a search for the bag that you were talking about. That seems pretty reasonable… might try it with my Rebel first 🙂
Gavin,
For a large group intended for a large wall portrait, buy or build a pano head and shoot a two or three frame pano. CS5 does a good job of stitching and you’ll have resolution limited only by the number of frames you shoot. The way you’ve posed the group, there are excellent places to make the break between frames for a three frame pano. Explain to the group what you’re doing so you have minimal movement of people between frames and it’ll work just fine.
I’ve done this with shots of the local orchestra where the subjects were more tightly packed than what you had, and it worked great using my DIY pano head.

Gavin,
do you have more info about the triangle composition stuff?
Dirk
Dirk triangles regarding groups is fairly straight forward. It’s a guideline to me, but bottom line is positioning heads so they form relative triangles tends to be pleasing. That said I know we could go deeper. I hope to do an article on group posing in the future. I believe I also made a Photo Couch podcast from a bit back on groups.
Gavin, I’ve started listening to you about 6 months ago and I learn something new from each show. Thanks so much for your willingness to share. Agree with you about LIghtroom 3 being slow. I thought it was my computer. Drove me to clean up my hard drive and consider additional ram. Still not making a difference. It was good to hear that I’m not the only one having trouble with LR 3.
Can totally see why you made it to Loan Collection with that image. Congrats. Have happy travels with your family.
