Silver Shadows 2 presets are my complete black and white system for Lightroom. In the news in recent months, it launched late in 2011 and it’s also been given a free update recently to version 2.2, an update that includes new features and full Lightroom 4 compatibility. I’m thankful for our press agent who’s been helping spread the word and for my customers who’ve had nothing but good things to say about it.

Silver Shadows 2 was featured in Joe Farace’s Shutterbug column in the March issue as well as the gear section of Digital Photo in the April issue. They even featured a portrait example of my son Asher that I had added to the press kit.

It’s really exciting to see years of refinement and work getting some press. Click images for larger views. If want to learn more about the collection visit the product page.. Thanks, Gavin

The Skinny Kid by Gavin Seim. Joshua Tree NP, Feb 2012

The family and I camped down on the flatland’s and took a nice drive into Joshua Tree that day. It was warm, but got cooler in the highlands and the choice to wear shorts turned out less than ideal. So the family was back in the car warming up after hiking and I ventured out near Skull Rock, finding this skinny little Joshua Tree standing alone, everyone ignoring it’s simplicity.

The Skinny Kid grew on me and soon I was experimenting with angles and ideas for how to best showcase what he had to offer. In the end this simple black and white scene struck me. A starkness of line. A cast shadow showing that his reach extends beyond his size. This tree has a perfect vantage. He gets to watch over this rocky landscape without distraction and reign as King of it’s trees.

Swirling City, 2011 by Gavin Seim. From the bridge, Twin Cities MN. Time Exposure.

This was about a year ago now, during our Fall 2010 road trip and my visit to the Twin Cities to teach an HDR workshop. I was walking with my group downtown, crossing over a bridge, the name of which escapes me. It’s big city here. industry and concrete. But flowing water always mesmerizes me. I took my time setting up, feeling that if I hurried I would get little more than a snapshot. In the end my effort paid off in this long exposure just between St. Paul and Minneapolis. The structures of the city meeting with the awesome power of the water and doing a dance right in front of my lens.

Silver Shadows 2 is finally here and it won’t disappoint. It represents years of refinement since v1 was released. It’s been expanded and revamped from the ground up and I think it will blow you away when you see the efficient high quality silver conversions you can do without leaving LR.

As always, I’ve made up a free sampler pack. This one include 6 great effects from SS2, including the one above that give a small sampling of just how powerful it is. You can download below, no strings attached. When you realize how much you like it, check the full collection. It has over a hundred effects, refined and organized into the ultimate black and white toolkit. Either way head over to the product page for the video of these presets in action.

Enjoy… Gav

I’ve been hinting at this for awhile, but today Silver Shadows II is getting official. This is a collection of LR presets for black and white that is like no other and I think it’s going to set a standard.

Black & White was my second ever presets collection and after some refinements and updates it became Silver Shadows. A collection of effects for black and white that kept getting better with free updates over the past few years. But I felt we needed something more.

Note, that anyone who buys Silver Shadows v1 after Sept 20th 2011 will get a free upgrade to V2. So even if you get v1 today, you’ll get an email with that free upgrade when v2 launches.

I’m passionate about black and white. I mean I’m really fanatical about it. I want to take digital images and make silver art from that that sings. There’s some great tools our there for B&W, but they can slow a workflow and usually require that you leave your RAW file behind, that throws away information and dynamic range that can be really valuable in making a great silver image.

This is just a little teaser I had made up. But the full collection is releasing soon along with all the details. SSII been remade from the ground up and will be the only toolkit you need for black and white.
