Nikon D3X – 24 Megapixel Monster?

nikon d3

Ya I know the D3 is barely on the shelves and into your hot hands and here I am talking about the next rev. This is seriously a RUMOR ONLY so don’t get you Visa out yet.

Engadgets reporting on this 24 megapixel Nikon D3X. Supposedly some hackers found a reference to it in the firmware of the current D3

Not super surprising, but it will be a powerhouse. I think the real question is DO WE NEED 24MP? I mean sure is had it purpose, but how often are we printing that big. I’ve made a beautiful 30×40 from an 8MP file. Printer are going to need to grow to meet the megapixels!

Personally I think the megapixel battle is becoming far less important than the ISO noise battle. What do you say?

  1. I feel the same way about the megapixel battle becoming less important.
On the other hand, the higher the megapixels, the more flexibility you have; at least theoretically.

  2. I agree that for serious photographers it is the improvement in ISO that is probably the most important, but there is no denying the marketing cache of having the “highest resolution” dslr on the block. Plus, the tech and engineering lessons learned in developing and refining beasts like that will certainly pay dividends as some of it migrates downwards into the more consumer friendly cameras.

About the Author

Glad you're here.

I'm from WA State USA and started studying photography in 97. I started work as a pro (using that word loosely because I sucked) using film at age 16. I learned fast but was not as easy to find training then. Sometimes I beat my head against the wall until I figured stuff out.

As digital dawned I went all in and got to study with masters like Ken Whitmire. In 09 I founded the Pro Photo Show podcast. I started promoting tone-focused editing. When Lightroom arrived, I started developing tools to make editing and workflow better.

20 years of study and photography around the country earned me a Master of Photography (M.Photog) from PPA. I got to see my workshops and tools featured in publications across the industry. Once I even won the prestigious HotOne award for my "EXposed" light and tone workshop.

Wanting something calmer, I moved to Mexico in 2017. It's a land of magical light. I'm here now exploring light and trying to master my weak areas. I make videos of that for my Youtube channel, sharing what I learn. I hope you'll stick around and be part of Light Hunters Tribe... Gavin
