Although CNET may have been a bit too swift in posting video for the camera a couple days ago [prior to Canon’s announcement], it looks like quite the frenzy of news is centered around Canon’s Rebel T1I ability to capture video. I always find it funny when info is ‘accidentally’ leaked in the tech world only for the victim [in this case Canon] to give off the impression as if they are forced to release this information. Be that as it may, Canon has a new ‘semi-entry level’ DSLR. Here are the specs:
- 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor
- HD video capture (1080p at 20fps; 720p at 30fps
- DIGIC 4 processor
- 3? LCD w/ 920k dot resolution
- 3.4 frames per second
- ISO 100 to 12800 sensitivity range [although if you look at the CNET video, it appears to only go up to 3200? They could still be tweaking the T1I’s OS]
Personally, I am still a bit skeptical of the quality of HD video pulled from a DSLR camera. There are tons of youtube video that makes a point to the contrary. For me, I would rather experiment with still photography and HD captured video on two different devices, but I understand that this is the next generation of photography and there are many eager hands willing to experiment with these types of cameras.
This does make the Canon T1I the cheapest DSLR that can capture HD video, which in some ways is a game changer. It comes in at the moderate price of $899. For your money, this is a good deal considering what comes packed in the camera. The small sensor lights are a bit concerning which is an immediate turn off for me, but there are plenty photographers who should look to this camera if they are still thinking about making the jump from point-and-shoots.

The 6400 and 12800 ISO settings must be unlocked in custom functions, that’s why they don’t appear in CNet’s video.
