by Gavin Seim: I have to say I’m pretty excited. Seim Effects tools were just featured in a glowing review by Joe Farace, in his Digital Innovations column inside the September issue of Shutterbug Magazine. It was a nice bit of recognition, by a great photographer, in a magazine that’s nearly as familiar to the photo world as the camera itself. Gave me a really nice bit of exposure (no pun intended). Below is a capture of the page 41. Go pick up the latest issue and take a peek.

I confess. When I started making all this stuff I was determined to make it really good. But I can’t say I expected it to take off so well. It’s been a few years and a lot of work, but I feel the system is really solid now and getting better all the time. This part of my job is almost like being a scientist. I sit down in my little test lab and just start trying things, searching for little nuances that do something remarkable. After the dust settles and I get it refined, I get to share what I discover with photographers all over the world.

Now I’m a huge proponent of getting things right in the camera. But when we get in right in camera, then get it right in post. We can make something magical. Being able to make these tools has really been a blessing and I want to give a shout out of thanks to all of you for helping it happen. Not to mention one to Joe, and Shutterbug for taking the time to notice this little punk fish in a big sea… Gav

by Gavin Seim: In a few weeks I’ll be loading our the trailer as myself and my family will embark on a month long photo adventure. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done and I’m very excited. The final destination will be Twin Cities MN, where I’ll be teaching my HDR and LR workshops, but the trip itself will be all about photography. I intend to try new things, explore new places and push my skills a bit further.

With that in mind, plus the fact that I plan to embark on these sort of adventures more regularly, I’ve started a new site. Don’t worry, I’m not closing my other projects. But I’ve been planning for some time to make a site for my fine art work. I did that, but with a bit of a twist. Instead of just making another portfolio site, I did what I wanted to do. I made a travelogue and a journal. A book of notes if you will. It’s called f164.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy Pro Photo Show, Seim Effects, or my client blogs. But this is more like a diary where I can share what I learn, show what I’ve made and let me hair down (though my hair is not very long).

While on my trip and beyond there’s likely to be quite a bit of activity on 164. I hope you’ll join in and share our journey. Pro Photo Show will remain active, and some favorite posts from f164 may even make it over here. But if you want to see a bit more  of the emblazoned adventurous photograoher, come on over to f164.

PS. On a side note, I’m pretty proud of the f164 site. I built it all in WordPress, using the Twenty Ten theme and a lot of CSS tweaking.

by Gavin Seim: Attempting to setup light outside with an with an umbrella, softbox, or even a lone strobe can quickly turn into a fiasco of tipping. I have a family session with over forty people this weekend, and the last thing I want to worry about was whether my lights are secure. One common method is to use sandbags, but I wanted something small, light and adaptable to keep stands from falling over. Behold the DIY quick release cords for.

PS. The wind was not intense on the day I made this, but I left them up all afternoon without reservation. These make a VERY stable light and they should handle heavy winds if needed. Do some tests of your own and if in doubt just add a few extra tether cords to make it as sturdy as you need. Also here is a good video on how to tie the Tautline Hitch.
