This is an article Gavin wrote over at Seim Effects recently regarding Raw vs Jpeg and their usability with presets and good workflow techniques.

As a photographer I shoot in the RAW file format. I find more flexibility in post production, and ultimately a better image quality with less hassle. When I was still in the Jpeg camp, I was told to shot RAW mainly because it was faster to edit! While using Jpeg I never quite got it, and felt my Jpeg workflow worked fine. Then I tries RAW! I soon realized that it was not only faster, but also had better quality. Now I know there’s some debate on this issue, but I feel I can get great images easier with RAW because there’s more information on the file to work with. It just makes sense.

Having said all that there are still Jpeg shooters. In a poll on Pro Photo Show we found that raw shooters currently make up for about 75% of photographers towards the advanced and pro end of the market. Of course the closer you come to consumer shooters the more Jpeg you’ll see

gavins lightroom presets

I just launched a huge Lightroom presets collection over at seimeffects.com. The set has over 50 cool presets in, covering everything in the workflow process from corrections to sassy creative color effects in a very broad variety.

If your looking for a good set of creative presets then check out power workflow presets. This set has been months in the making and has some killer effects. If you like Lightroom you’ll like Power Workflow, and there’s also a video over there that shows them in action. Check it out.

Update… The issue we were having with the site seem to be resolved. All links should work now. If you have further problems feel free to contact.

LIGHTROOM

Lightroom users will have to wait a short time for an update. Adobe claims they will have a free update to Lightroom in mid November. So two weeks isn’t a bad wait at all. But if you are a hard core Lightroom user such as myself you will have to wait to put Leopard on your production machine.

The Lightroom Journal, produced by the Lightroom team has posted the following:

As noted in Adobe’s Leopard FAQ the current version of Lightroom 1.2 is not fully compatible with Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5. The good news is that we’ll be releasing an update in mid-November that will address key compatibility issues. In the interim, the following list describes areas where photographers may encounter problems with Lightroom 1.2 on Leopard:

From Fraser Speirs

Partly just because it was there and partly because I feel like I haven’t given it a fair crack of the whip, I spent some time yesterday and today with Adobe Lightroom.

For those who don’t care to read the minutiae, I’ll get to the point: In my opinion, Aperture vs. Lightroom is the same discussion as Canon vs. Nikon. Each has strengths and weaknesses, but it’s not a no-brainer decision either way. You’ll produce good results with both applications, and the real decisions come down to personal preference, and specific features that you may need for a very specific reason.

So, let’s dig in deeper:
