For you Nikon users out there – here’s some news on the D300.

Everytime I turn around, Nikon seems to unveil a semi-pro camera body that has me wanting to tap into my children’s college fund.

The latest is Nikon’s D300, a 12.3-megapixel monster that is very similar to the D3, but with some new features.

One of the most talked about features is the new monitor – bigger, crisper and more life-like. Ken Rockwell has a nice review here.

While the monitor is nice, I am most interested in getting behind the lens and checking out the new 51-point auto focus system. It’s coupled with Nikon’s new 3D Focus Tracking Feature and, as long rumored, a live preview of the image on the LCD screen.

Nikon just recently launched a new project with Flickr.  It’s a site that allows users to get free advice.  Yes, that’s what they claim.

It’s touted as the Nikon Digital Learning Center on Flickr.

More from the release:

“Complementing an interactive educational site on Nikon’s USA Web site, the launch of this new program on Flickr is revolutionary for a camera manufacturer. As an extension of Nikon School, this online resource provides Flickr members with tutorials, practical photography tips and advice from Nikon photo professionals to assist them in taking the photos they’ve always dreamed of capturing.”

Check it out and let us know how extensive it is OR if it’s a waste of time!

Well it looks like both Canon and Nikon shooters got their much rumored gear this week! Nikon officially announced their newest DSLR camera bodies the D300 and the D3 today. Here is a quick run down of some of the specs.

  • 12.1-megapixel FX format (full frame) CMOS sensor
  • 3-inch, 190,000-pixel VGA viewfinder with a 170-degree viewing angle and live view
  • 51-point autofocus system with 15 cross-type AF points
  • 200-6400 ISO range. When set to Hi 2 Mode has an ISO equivalent of 25,600. That is just insane (and probably extremely noisy! We’ll have to wait and see.)
