The HD Photo file format from Microsoft is starting to get some attention, and according to an article over on ars technica the format is being looked at for standardization by the Jpeg committee. No we didn’t know there was a committee for jpegs either, but hey someones gotta do it.

Anyways if the format is adopted it will be called JpegXR in stead of HDPhoto. Another format that’s been around for awhile, but never been picked up in earnest is JPEG2000. It’s capable of many of the same capabilities as HD Photo, but the HD Photo requires significantly less computer resources power and decompresses significantly faster which we really like, and could get the ball rolling.

A few bottom lines here. The current Jpeg format is getting a bit long in the tooth so may be getting about time for something fresh. To really take off however it will need to become standard in the cameras we shoot with. This may happen, but it’s not likely to be here real soon.

The Jpeg committee has already started the standardization process, and the voting will last thru October of this year. For the whole scoop shoot on over to ars techinca for more details. You can also find out more about things that are going on by visiting the Jpeg committee website.

claire_nouvian_unidentified_species_250173.jpgWe noticed a quick review of a book over at Imaging Insider, and decided to check it out. The book is called The Deep, and it’s by photographer Claire Nouvian. Whether your an underwater photographer or not this book will amaze.

You can check out a whole article on this over at CDNN, but the bottom lone is that this book sets the standard for underwater photography. Now we understand that this is one of those things that could inspire us to to go and buy an Ewa Marine and start shooting the deep, but don’t expect to be shooting this kind of work overnight. We found the book for a pretty good buy on Amazon if you want to check it out below.

It seems Claire spent more than two years on this project, and it looks like her work paid off. I’ve never been a big follower of underwater photogrtaphy books, but this one caught my eye enough put it on my amazon wishlist soon as I found it.

Well I finally deiced to take the plunge. We’ve been talking about forums on PPS since the beginning, and we’re finally here.

The new Pro Photography Forums section of PPS will now allow us to build a community of photographers and individuals on a free forum, that we will hopefully build a relaxed atmosphere in.

I’ve tried top integrate the forum into PPS as cleanly as possible using the SMF platform. And it should be fun to have the whole PPS community be able to chat, and share information.

So what are you waiting for? It’s free! Go sign up, and start talking.

Canon fans may soon rejoice. It looks like the upgrade of the very popular Canon 30D, the Canon 40D that we’ve been waiting for is near at hand. According to a post on PhotographyBlog.com, The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) has listed the the Canon 40D on it’s PictBridge-certified product list page. Now bear in mind that this is a rumor, but it stands to reason that the 40D will grace our camera bags eventually, and why not sooner rather than later.

So what are you waiting for? Start spreading the rumor, and share the joy. Just remember that there has been no official announcement yet. If your a Nikon fan you may weep now, but stay tune and we’ll keep you up to date on the latest happenings.

Summary from Adobe:

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Photoshop CS2 and CS3 that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these potential vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. A malicious BMP, DIB, RLE, or PNG must be opened in Photoshop by the user for an attacker to exploit these potential vulnerabilities. Users are recommended to update their installations with the patches provided below, and Adobe encourages all customers to be cautious before opening any unknown file, regardless of which application they may be using.

Get the updates here!

BEFORE YOU UPDATE:

Make sure you do a full back up of your system and  of course your photos. Updating usually doesn’t bother anything but I’ve known people who have lost EVERYTHING from updates and didn’t have a back up.

Until Next Time,

Jarrod Michael
