by Gavin Seim: I’ve said it many times. I think Burn & Dodge is a very under appreciated tool in today’s digital world. It’s about subtlety and taking the time for precise burning and dodging once your primary effects are finished can make a world of difference in your final work. Good B&D work can separate the men from the boys when it comes to the final work.

With good b&d can draw the attention exactly where you need it, enhance dynamic range, add dimension and more. It’s all there in this simple tool. I made a quick video recently as I was working to show how I use b&d in a to take control my scene. This clip looks at skies in particular, but really it can make any image pop. I also plan to make more videos on B&D the future. There’s a lot to be learned from it.

Update 10/2011. I made a new, much better quality video about managing presets. You can watch it here.

by Gavin Seim: If you searched around, you’ll might have stumbled across the article I wrote some time back on PPS about installing Lightroom Presets. We photographers tend to be such visual people however and I felt a video would make it easier. We’ll cover installing organizing and backing up pretty much any kind of Lightroom preset. Brush presets, develop presets, you name it. Here it is.

Or, direct download MP4 HD video. 146MB, Right click and “Save As”

My brother Grant and his Wife Aimee has a some a few days ago. Sadly, due to a rare umbilical problem at birth he passed away.

In memory of Grant IV and to help my brother and his wife with medical expenses I’ve made a special collection. These are never before released Lightroom and Photoshop effects, as well other goodies including a new HDR training video. 100% of from this profits go to help out. It’s a good cause, and a great deal that will not stay this price. More details and video here.

I appreciate all the kind words people have been sending in. I’ve also set up a special address for condolences. For those who wish to send them they can be direct to grantseim4@gmail.com and I’ll forward them along.

Gavin

My Bad -From CNET
"My Bad" -From CNET

Although CNET may have been a bit too swift in posting video for the camera a couple days ago [prior to Canon’s announcement], it looks like quite the frenzy of news is centered around Canon’s Rebel T1I ability to capture video. I always find it funny when info is ‘accidentally’ leaked in the tech world only for the victim [in this case Canon] to give off the impression as if they are forced to release this information.  Be that as it may, Canon has a new ‘semi-entry level’ DSLR.  Here are the specs:

  • 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor
  • HD video capture (1080p at 20fps; 720p at 30fps
  • DIGIC 4 processor
  • 3? LCD w/ 920k dot resolution
  • 3.4 frames per second
  • ISO 100 to 12800 sensitivity range [although if you look at the CNET video, it appears to only go up to 3200? They could still be tweaking the T1I’s OS]

Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Bridge CS4 Pro Photo Show rating, 7.5/10
Links throughout the review will take you to video’s that show features in action.

The Hot:

  • The new adjustment panel puts you in control and makes adjustment layers a whole new animal. You can add an adjustment layer then edit it in real time from the adjustments panel (think Lightroom or Aperture panels) I’ve added screenshots below.
  • Content Aware Scale allows you to change the aspect ratio of an image. It’s amazing, and I find myself using it all the time (far more than I expected). For example, I can convert an image from and 8×12 to and 8×10 format without cropping off the edges. While it’s not perfect, it does work well on most images
  • The interface still looks similar, but new integration and panel styling makes things a bit tidier.
  • New 3d manipulation features. I can’t offer much personal experience in the world of 3D, but the 3D engine has been totally revamped.
